Anybody have trouble occasionally getting the 790 rear PTO lever to engage fully? Sometimes mine either only partially raises and I have to let it down and try again, or sometimes there is a slight gear grinding noise as I lift it into position to engage the PTO. Other times it lifts into place without any problem at all.
If the level is sticking, sometimes the solution I've found is to let the level back down, completely release the clutch (transmission in neutral), and then depress the clutch all the way down again. Does is sound fairly normal to anyone? Anything else I can try?

I always double clutch it (depress clutch fully at least twice), and make sure the tractor is idling as slow as it will go, before engaging the PTO. Even then, I nearly always encounter a slight gear clash. Since the PTO obviously isn't synchronized, I don't know if there is a way around it. It you are using an implement such as a rotary cutter and have been running it for awhile, then disengage and re-engage, you'll have quite a bit of gear clashing since the cutters continue turning for several minutes after you disengage the PTO. In that case, you'd want to wait until the blades have totally stopped. ....

Also ensure that there isn't excessive clutch petal free play. I think these are TX driven PTO's. come to a full stop and if the engine has been at high rpm, wait a bit before engaging the pto to give the TX input shaft a chance to spin down.
Thes aren't sophisticated gears and they will clash a bit or simply not engage. A little tap from the clutch or moving the tractor can change the gear positions so it'll engage easier. ....
